Hot Chocolate, warm blankets and the trusty old gas heater are some of the first things that come to mind when we think about winter, oh yes, let us not forget loadshedding!

Winter 2022 is around the corner, and while we stock up on winter essentials to protect us against the cold it’s worthwhile ensuring we are prepared against winter related insurance risks and how to avoid them.

“Winter is a season of recovery and preparation.”

– Paul Theroux

What are "winter related insurance risks"?

These are perils or events that are more likely to occur during winter or occur more frequently during winter, mostly caused by the measures we take to protect ourselves against the cold weather, which could cause a loss or damage.

  • Burst Pipes – Cold enough weather causes pipes to freeze which can lead to the bursting of pipes, this in turn can cause damage to the building and contents, not to mention the discomfort of missing a bath or shower. Insulating pipes that are on the outside of the wall or in the roof could reduce the chances significantly
  • Fire – All stocked up on wood and gas for lazy evenings infront of the heater or fireplace? Great! Just make sure of the following:
    • Is the Fireplace Chimney properly cleared?
    • Is the gas heater due for a service
    • Never leave heat sources unattended.
    • Keep heaters away from curtains and furniture.
    • Ensure fires are properly put out after use
  • Maintenance – Winter is the best time to do the required maintenance on your properties ahead of the rainy seasons, no one wants a claim rejected due to lack of maintenance or wear and tear
  • Icey Conditions – Cold weather can cause frozen / foggy windscreens, this can cause significant distraction to drivers. Spend a few minutes to ensure your windshield is ready for the trip rather than testing your blurred vision driving ability.
  • Electric Blankets & Heaters – Most of us are rather weary of safety when using these items, here are a few considerations:
    • Replace older blankets.
    • Check blankets for rips/tears/damage or burns.
    • Ensure that the embedded heating wires, electrical cord, and temperature control system are in good repair and fit correctly,
    • Check that heaters are clean and in good working order,
  • Overloaded Electrical Circuits – Avoid overloading outlets with multi-plugs filled with appliances/heaters & chargers, rather spread the load evenly over various circuits to avoid overheating and melting of insulating material
